Clean & Safe Streets: Our Partnership with Reliable Housekeepers
Keeping Pico Boulevard clean, welcoming, and walkable is one of the core priorities of the BLQ BID. We’ve partnered with Reliable Housekeepers, a trusted local maintenance team, to provide ongoing sanitation and street-level services throughout the BID.
Together, we’re working to improve the quality of life for businesses, residents, and visitors in the BID.
What They Do
The Reliable Housekeepers team performs daily and weekly tasks to keep the district looking its best:
Sidewalk sweeping and litter removal
Emptying public trash cans throughout the BID
Reporting and submitting 311 service requests to the City
Bulky item pickup and illegal dumping response
Their crews cover the entire BID footprint, ensuring that all 22 blocks receive consistent, proactive care.
Impact by the Numbers
Over 30,000 lbs of trash collected monthly
All trash cans emptied regularly and monitored for overflow
BID sidewalks swept and maintained multiple times per week
Hundreds of 311 requests submitted annually to address graffiti, abandoned items, and other concerns
Why It Matters
Clean streets make our neighborhood safer, more inviting, and more vibrant. This ongoing maintenance not only enhances the experience for pedestrians and shoppers, but it also supports our small businesses, improves public health, and reflects pride in our community.

Perched atop the Public Storage building at the corner of Pico Boulevard and Normandie Avenue, the iconic Byzantine Latino Quarter neon sign has long been a beacon for our neighborhood. Originally installed in the early 2000s as a visual celebration of the area’s diverse heritage, the sign has become a landmark symbol of identity for the BLQ.
In 2024, just ahead of the annual Greek Festival at Saint Sophia Cathedral, the BID prioritized much-needed repairs to the sign. Over time, several of its LED components had failed, leaving half the sign unlit. Thanks to coordinated efforts between the BID and community partners, the repairs were successfully completed in time for the festival.
This project not only preserved a piece of neighborhood history, but also reinforced the BID’s commitment to maintaining the character and pride of the district. The sign continues to welcome visitors and locals alike to the Byzantine Latino Quarter.

Maintaining a clean and welcoming streetscape is a key priority for the BLQ BID. In recent efforts, the BID funded and coordinated power washing services around two key community institutions: the perimeter of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral and St. Thomas the Apostle School. These spaces serve hundreds of families and visitors each week, and regular maintenance helps ensure the surrounding sidewalks are safe, sanitary, and inviting.
As funding becomes available, the BID plans to expand power washing efforts to additional locations along Pico Boulevard, particularly around high-foot traffic areas, places of worship, and near public schools. These improvements not only enhance the look of the neighborhood, but also support public health and pedestrian comfort.

A core part of the BLQ BID’s mission is to advocate for the needs of our district—and we’re proud of the growing relationships we’ve built with Council District 1 and Council District 10. Both offices are in regular attendance at our BID board meetings, where they listen to stakeholder concerns and support tangible improvements throughout the corridor.
Their support has already led to:
Installation of new trash cans along Pico Boulevard
A pilot program for FOG (Fats, Oils, and Grease) receptacles to reduce waste from street vending
The trimming of massive, mature trees that had become a significant maintenance and safety concern for local businesses and property owners
These efforts represent just a fraction of what’s possible when local government, community members, and the BID work together. We look forward to continuing this collaboration to create a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant Pico Boulevard for all.
